The Vembanad Lake, the largest backwater in Kerala, is habitat for many marine and freshwater fish species. The bird sanctuary extends for over 14 acres and came into existence following preservation efforts from the government. If you are lucky you will chance upon a Siberian Crane, a special visitor during the migratory season.

By Bus: There are buses available through the day from Cochin and Kottayam.
By Train: One can take any train that goes via Kottayam (16km)
By Air: The nearest airport is the Cochin International Airport (75 km)
By Boat: Take the jetty from Muhamma (located near Alappuzha) directly to Kumarakom Jetty.
